In our family, we have a tradition of decorating sugar cookies on Christmas Day. Here are the kids...our youngest son Andrew and our 4 nephews, all working hard on some Christmas cookies (that they get to take home). They are always a family favorite! Decorate with your favorite frosting. Our favorite recipe is the classic one from Betty Crocker.
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup butter, softened
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. almond extract
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
Mix powdered sugar, butter, vanilla, almond extract, and egg in larg bowl. Stir in remaining ingredients. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours.
Heat oven to 375F.
Divide dough in half Roll each half 1/4 inch thick on lightly floured surface (I usually roll them a bit thinner so the shapes look more crisp). Cut into desired shapes with 2-2 1/2 inch cookie cutters.
Bake 7-8 minutes or until edges are light brown. Cool on wire rack and decorate as desired (may be sprinkled with colored sugar before baking if you do not plan to frost them).
